Cambridge Health Alliance Offers New
Minimally Invasive Hemorrhoid Procedure
CAMBRIDGE, MA, January 10, 2009— Millions of people suffer from hemorrhoids. At
Cambridge Health Alliance, Erika Fellinger, M.D. offers hemorrhoid sufferers a new
minimally invasive procedure to help patients get back to their normal activities.
A.M.I.’s Doppler Guided HAL/RAR System was designed to repair the problem and to
alleviate the discomfort associated with hemorrhoid surgery, both during treatment
and recovery. According to Dr. Fellinger, “the HAL/RAR® System is working very well
on my patients. I am delighted to see the patients recovering faster, and with less
pain than with other procedures I have used.”
Hemorrhoids are a common disease and many people suffer “silently” rather that seek
treatment. Unlike many of the alternative hemorrhoid surgical procedures, the HAL/RAR
procedure is minimally invasive and allows patients to return to their normal lives
within a day or two.
For the past 10 years, surgeons have been performing Hemorrhoidal Artery Ligation
and Proctoplasty to treat Grade I-IV hemorrhoids. With a small, ultrasound probe,
surgeons can quickly and precisely locate and reduce blood supply to the inflamed
and enlarged hemorrhoidal cushion using a simple stitch and sutures. The procedure
involves no surgical excision, stapling or banding and is relatively painless.
The procedure, which has been widely used in Europe for years, received FDA 510K
clearance in 2006 for use in the United States. Currently, about 50 hospitals across
the United States are offering this procedure with the A.M.I. device. People suffering
from hemorrhoids should consult their local physician about treatment alternatives.
